Serious fire at Lewes recycling site

Six fire engines were scrambled to the scene at Light Bros in Southerham Lane at just after 5am.
Plumes of smoke could be seen from the A27 and multiple 999 calls were made by members of the public.

Hide AdAn East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We remain at the scene of a serious fire at a recycling site in Lewes
“As of 7.30am we have six fire engines, an aerial ladder platform, and two water carriers along with the command support unit on scene.
“Approximately 250 tonnes of scrap metal is alight.”
The spokesman confirmed no one had been injured and said steady progress was being made to tackle the blaze.
People are advised to avoid the area and keep their doors and windows shut because of the significant amount of smoke in the area, they added.
