Who is actually running the country?

Over the past few years we have had a banking crisis, a collapse in commodity prices, especially oil, and a major problem with immigration into Europe, none of which were predicted and all of which have an impact on Britain. It is simply not possible to predict the events which may happen in the next few years and their effect on Britain, whether it is a member of the European Union or not.
The only fact that we can rely on is that when we go to the polls at a general election we are not selecting people to run the country on our behalf but instead we are appointing mere functionaries whose task is to implement the rules and regulations and laws imposed by Brussels.
