LETTER: More railings are needed

I went down on a step having stumbled, missed my footing and went down.
I sustained two black eyes, some bruising on a hand and one arm, but nothing was broken, fortunately.

Due to the state of my eyes I attracted a lot of attention but all were very kind and much concerned for my welfare. The concern from so many people was really moving. I would like to thank all concerned – even now, two or three weeks later, people are still looking and remarking on the improvement I have shown. It is remarkable, the reaction.
In writing this letter, not only do I wish to thank so many people for their kindness and consideration, but to mention that perhaps more could be done to provide railings in more public places, for people to grab when they fall.
I have noticed in certain areas – the promenade and the steps outside the Guildbourne Centre in Worthing – there are steps but the railings are only at either side, not in a central spot as well. If you fall on these steps, what do you grab for support? The balcony at the Assembly Hall, Worthing, is another where railings are sparse.
