LETTER: Memories of Boots libraries
Established in 1899 by Florence Boot they thrived for 67 years. Hastings and St Leonards were both home to a branch of Boots Booklovers Library. In my book ‘Lipsticks and Library Books’ former staff share entertaining memories of wealthy, eccentric subscribers and strict spinster librarians.
This is the story of a privileged elite in a genteel world that existed really not so long ago but which seems very distant from today.
