Northiam starts bonfire season with a bang

Bonfire Societies from across the county made their way to the village to take part in a torch-lit procession before gathering on the field for an enormous bonfire and stunning fireworks display.
Northiam Bonfire Society, led the procession in their distinctive Highwayman costumes. They were joined by societies from Rye, Hastings, Robertsbridge, Staplecross, Ninfield Battle and Seaford as well as a number of drumming groups.

Hide AdThe honour of lighting the bonfire went to popular Pat Brabon, who mans our school crossing patrol, and her husband Trevor. The couple were celebrating their Golden Wedding Anniversary on the day but are chose to share it with bonfire revellers.
This year’s bonfire raised money for good causes, including the new Helping Hands scheme being set up in the village, and Little Gate Farm in Beckley, which provides supportive employment for people with learning disabilities.
The local bonfire tradition continues with big events at Hastings, on October 15 Ninfield on October 22, Staplecross on October 29, Battle, on November 5, Rye on November 12, Robertsbridge on November 19 and Hawkhurst on November 26.
