History society talk on Gallipoli
Members previously heard about mass clocks from Gerald Gazdar who showed them photographs of many examples from local churches.
Often located near a church doorway the scratch dial – a kind of sundial – indicated when it was time for mass.

Hide AdAt the next meeting on Wednesday, April 6, at 7.45pm in the Village Hall, High Street, Upper Beeding, Matthew Jones of West Sussex Record Office will be giving a talk about the Royal Sussex Regiment at Gallipoli in 1915.
The society identified five men from Beeding and Bramber who served at Gallipoli. Two were killed in action and were featured in the Steyning Herald on September 10, 1915. Two died later in France and one survived the war.
The survivor was Harry Phillips who later worked for the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and was featured in the Steyning Herald on October 9, 2014.
