As bearer of the city’s silver-gilt mace, Mr Fogden was known to enjoy his long-standing duty of carrying the antique to Chichester Cathedral in the annual ‘Mace Day’ procession.
He was employed by Chichester City Council in 1988 and retired in 2006, although he went on to assist the council with casual custodian duties in retirement, eventually stepping down from macebearing in 2015.

John performed many other duties for the city council quietly, effectively and with great dedication and kindness. He was very proud of the history of the city and the role he played.”
