Ditchling Film Society: Tonight, Thursday 2 March, Sunset Song is being screened in Ditchling Village Hall. Adapted from a novel by Lewis Grassic Gibbon of the same name about an Aberdeenshire girl, Chris Guthrie, growing to womanhood seven years before World War One. Chris is one of the numerous children of a tyrannical farmer, John Guthrie, and a whimpering mother, Jean, growing up in a rural Scottish community. The drama spans six years of Chris’s life as she searches for her independence with the conflicts and choices a young woman experiences reflecting the struggle between tradition and change. The film finally ends with the dignified loneliness of a new Chris, a woman who seems to have gone through several lives, now and forever as one with the land. Beautifully shot, the film is an intimate epic of hope, tragedy and love at the dawning of the Great War. Director: Terence Davies. English. 2015. 135 mins. 15 Cert.
