Council ‘ready’ to play its part in supporting refugees
Leader Louise Goldsmith released a statement this afternoon (Monday, August , following the emergence of several petitions from residents declaring refugees welcome in their towns.
Prime Minister David Cameron today announced Britain would resettle up to 20,000 Syrian refugees over the next five years.

Hide AdMrs Goldsmith said: “No one could fail to be moved by the plight of those fleeing war and persecution and the terrible scenes relating to that which have been played out on our televisions.
“We stand awaiting further information and detail from the Prime Minister and are ready to work alongside districts and boroughs as well as charities to play our part in supporting extra refugees welcomed into Britain.
“We will wait for further details of the Government’s long term funding proposals for this humanitarian effort.”
Harrowing images depicting the body of three-year old Syrian refugee Aylan Kurdi washed up on a Turkish beach prompted a series of petitions on campaign website 38 Degrees.

Hide AdMore than 700 signatures have been received on separate petitions for Chichester, Horsham, Worthing, Bognor Regis, Shoreham, Steyning, Haywards Heath, Crawley, Mid Sussex and Rustington.
